Tackling illiteracy in our community

In September last year, the VW Community Trust celebrated 25 years in existence, it was also at this celebration that a literacy project within the Uitenhage area was launched.

The VW Community Trust formed a partnership with non profit organisation Shine Literacy to implement one of the components of the literacy promotion project.

Shine Parent / Family Literacy Workshops equip parents and caregivers with knowledge and skills to help them support learning in their home.

The workshops build on parents' existing understanding, helping them to value what they know and to embrace their vital roles in their child's education.

They give tips, practical ideas and new resources that enable parents to develop a repertoire of strategies and tools for helping their children to become successful readers and writers.

At the beginning of March, Shine conducted the first two-and-a-half hour Reading Workshop for over 30 VWSA Employees who are parents at the PeoplePavilion.
