Volkswagen Creating leaders in the Community

08 December 2017

On 15 September 2017, VWSA hosted 50 learners (25 Girls and 25 Boys) to attend a camp at Bushpig Adventures in Port Elizabeth.

Invited were learners from Nonzini Luzipho Primary, Ashton Primary School, Vuba Primary School, Mngcunube Primary School, Uitenhage Primary School and Ntlemeza Primary School, all from the Uitenhage area.

These schools have previously taken part in other Community Trust initiatives under the Volkswagen for Good campaign, which focuses on education and youth development.

The camp activities included educational games that taught learners valuable leadership skills which will prepare them for senior primary and high school. The camp forms part of the Volkswagen Community Trust Legacy Literacy Programme which has various elements from practical workshops where children learn to read, and teachers being trained in reading skills and mentoring.

It was found that reading resources were lacking so Volkswagen took it a step further by introducing mobile libraries in all grade R classes of all the participating schools as well as after care classes and Foundation Phase Programmes. This initiative was launched in conjunction with Volkswagen’s Employee Programme, Show of Hands where employees assisted in upgrading the facilities of the Primary Schools.

Because VWSA understands that education is a two way street, a mentorship programme called “Teach like Champion” for teachers was also introduced. In addition, an annual Literacy Programme was launched where top speakers from the Department of Education will engage teachers in crucial matters relating reading and education and the teachers can get an opportunity to get instant answers relating on academic challenges in Schools.
